A small patch of ornamental feathers on the chest can become yellow in spring. The brown pelican (P. occidentalis), a marine species of the southern US, is a casual visitor to the BC coast and eastern Canada. The species “is undergoing a dramatic expansion of its breeding range in North America,” the study published in the journal Ontario Birds said. The White Pelican leaves Alberta before freeze-up in late September and migrates to warmer coastal areas to spend the winter. White Pelican Park is located approximately 60 km northwest of Williams Lake on the Chilcotin Plateau.
