The Arabian Oryx is white in its color and this is why it is also called the white oryx. The reason why the Arabian Oryx became extinct in the wild and became endangered is because of over hunting of the animal. The Arabian Oryx (Oryx leucoryx) is a species of concern belonging in the species group "mammals" and found in the following area(s): Arabian Peninsula. Arabian oryx formerly occurred in the deserts of the western UAE. This species is also known by the following name(s): White Oryx. The Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx), also called the white oryx, was extinct in the wild as of 1972, but was reintroduced to the wild starting in 1982.
Arabian Oryx is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and it has been listed on Appendix 1 of CITES since 1975.
Arabian oryx are most active during the morning and evening. The Arabian oryx or white oryx (Oryx leucoryx) is one of wildlife's conservation success stories. It prefers to live in steppes and deserts that can be found in different countries that are located in the Arabian Peninsula. This over hunting was done both by the Bedouin for meat and hide as well as by hunting parties which regarded it as a sport.
This was mostly due to poaching. This antelope of the Arabian Peninsula and Sinai Desert became extinct in the wild by the 1960s, mostly due to hunters shooting them with high-powered rifles. They are about currently 1200 in the wild and 6000 in captivity. The Arabian oryx Oryx leucoryx was endangered. The Arabian or white oryx has a tufted tail, medium-sized body, two long and straight horns and is widely known for its shoulder bump. During the middle of the day, which is the hottest time of day, Arabian oryx find shade and dig holes to find cool sand to lay down in. 1.2.1 The Arabian Oryx is the smallest of the four species in the genus Oryx. To save these animals, nine Arabian oryx from private collections in Oman, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, as well as from the London Zoo, were moved to the Phoenix Zoo in Arizona. Since 1972, it already has been extinct in the wild, in its original habitat. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, former President of the UAE, found a valuable breeding herd of oryx in Abu Dhabi that has furnished stock for reintroductions. Many studies on captive and released oryx populations have been carried out over the last 20-30 years, producing a large amount of information on its biology (see References). It went extinct in the wild in 1972 due to overhunting, but was reintroduced into the wild thanks to captive breeding programs.
