Common snapping turtles have a larger range in Canada than many other freshwater turtle species, though they remain in the southern parts of the country. One can easily spot these species along the Rocky Mountains of eastern USA. Distribution of Common Snapping Turtle. Snapping turtles can be found in provinces ranging from Saskatchewan in the west to Nova Scotia in the east. Their range stretches from Iowa, west into Texas, and east into Georgia and northern Florida. They also dwell in parts of Southern Canada and Gulf of Mexico. It hibernates in the mud or silt on the bottom of lakes and rivers, usually not too far from the shore. Their preferred habitats usually have a muddy bottom with plenty of substrate to dig beneath. This species may inhabit surprisingly small wetlands, ponds and ditches. They are found in rivers and streams that feed into the Gulf of Mexico. Habitat.
